The Church of the Brethren stands at a crossroads. Recent decades have been defined by paralyzing conflict. In response to the ongoing conflict, at the 2017 Annual Conference, the delegate body affirmed a report from the Leadership Team and the Council of District Executives that report concluded with this assertion: “To stay on the journey together, it is also crucial that the church discern the compelling vision that this body of Christ is called to pursue.”
At Annual Conference in July, we as a denomination embarked on the “Compelling Vision” journey to rediscover our Christ-centered mission. What is it that Jesus Christ would have us be and do as a people of faith and action? The delegates began the process of prayerfully giving input into the answer. Next year’s Annual Conference will continue that process.
Until then, congregations from all 24 districts will take extended time to give their insights into who we are, what we believe, and what we are called to do as the people of God. It is an invitation to place our trust in God’s Spirit and engage in a visioning process to discern what God is calling us to do together with the fervent hope that our commitment to Jesus, to one another, and to serving our God as the body of Christ might be renewed. In the Northern Ohio District, there are four opportunities to participate in this journey. The dates/times/locations are listed to the right. A member of the Compelling Vision Process Team will provide leadership. Your presence at one (or more than one) of these sessions is vital as we listen for God’s voice and discern Christ’s calling.
